Our story
August Van has been a leading personal injury attorney for over thirty years. He worked on high-profile cases such as the tobacco lawsuit, the Legionella outbreak at the Westfriese Flora, and the Implanon case. In 2015, he secured a record-breaking amount in compensation for pain and suffering for a victim of a serious medical error. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he served as a deputy judge and has been affiliated with the Free University of Amsterdam for 25 years, where he has mentored and inspired generations of students.
One of them is Dalila Salhi. “She was one of my best students,” August recalls. “Empathetic, sharp, and decisive. I could tell right away that she had what it takes to become an excellent lawyer.”
Dalila completed her thesis under August’s supervision, focusing on the question of who bears the costs when a victim is forced to relocate to a more expensive home following an accident. “Victims often have to wait years for suitable housing,” she explains. Together, they developed the “duty to facilitate”: a new legal concept through which victims can more quickly secure a suitable housing solution.
After she joined a major consulting firm, they published a second joint academic article. Their collaboration proved so strong that they soon came up with the idea of starting their own firm—a place where they could fully dedicate their knowledge, experience, and vision to helping victims.

During his lectures, he told the story of a five-year-old girl who had been struck by a taxi in a residential area. Her mother found her badly injured body. She sought compensation because she couldn’t get the horrific images out of her head. At the time, that was legally impossible. But her lawyer managed to convince the judge of her right to recognition and compensation. Every law student knows the case. It wasn’t until later that I found out August represented the mother in this case.”

- August earned his Ph.D. in legal causation, regularly speaks at conferences, and published more than 70 academic articles. He is an editor of the law journal 'Tijdschrift Vergoeding Personenschade' and a member of the LSA association: the highest standard of excellence in the personal injury sector.
